Saving more than 25 football fields full of food. That sounds pretty impressive, right? Well, that’s exactly what we did. And as we continue to grow, we’d like to look back at the impact we’ve made until now. Let’s start off strong – Orbisk has already saved over 1.9 million kilos of food from being wasted. That’s like rescuing 4.4 million meals from ending up in the trash. And this is still only the beginning. In 2024 alone, Orbisk saved over 1.25 million kilograms of food from landfills. Not only has Orbisk saved more food in 2024 than in the past five years combined, but it also saved three times more food this year than last! That’s the power of compounding impact. And it’s pretty impressive, but it doesn’t end there.
6.1 million kilos of CO₂ emissions have been prevented, along with 13.9 billion liters of water. The same amount of water that flows over Niagara Falls for an entire hour and twenty minutes. And enough CO₂ to drive a car around the entire planet… 694 times. Or drive for 32 years non-stop, going 100 km/h. That’s an inconceivable amount of CO₂, isn’t it? Unfortunately, its impacts on the planet are very real. But as this impact report will show you, where there is a will, there is a way. There are solutions to this seemingly impossible problem. And it all starts with data.
How did we make this impact?
In case you don’t know already, the Orbi is our food waste management system that tracks all your food waste. It tracks when, where, and why you throw away your food, whether it’s plate waste or over-preparation, the Orbi can recognize it. Why do all this tracking? Well… because without data – without knowing why you’re wasting food – you will not be able to reduce it. With the Orbi, though, it’s made effortless for you. Automatic tracking, AI recognition, and ready-to-use tables and charts allow you to analyze your progress easily. All without any manual input from you. And just like that, the first step – data collection – is done.
The second step is, with the help of our Food Waste Coaches, analyzing the data to identify improvement areas and patterns. Strategies are then put in place to optimize the kitchen processes that result in less food ending up in the bin. And more money in your wallet. But don’t stop there. There is always room for improvement. Repeat this process, and optimize, optimize, optimize!
What’s next for Orbisk?
Our goal – our mission – is about creating long-term behavioral change that results in less food waste, and a more sustainable food system. This has always been the goal and will continue to be the goal. As CEO Olaf van der Veen says: “The year 2024 has been pivotal for us. We have secured major contracts with hotel chains, caterers, and cruise lines, successfully expanded our operations across 42 countries, and raised over €8 million in Series A venture capital to fuel our ambitious growth plans. Our work is scaling at a rapid pace, which is incredible, since making a positive impact at scale is what drives us.” And this is only the beginning of Orbisk. Our ambitious goal to reach 2 billion kgs of food saved by 2029 remains our north star – and it’s well within our reach.
